Privacy for software we make

15 October 2026

Devonport Studios makes software and websites. This page covers personal information those products handle. It is not linked from the studio website. You reach it from a direct address, such as the privacy link in an app or on a store listing.

A product is named below only when it handles personal information. If a product is not named, Devonport Studios does not receive personal information from it. A website we build for a client is that client’s site, and it is not covered here unless this page names it.

The studio website

devonportstudios.co.za stores a theme choice in your browser under the name devonport-theme, so the site can stay light or dark. That choice stays on your device. The site does not use analytics. The contact form does not send messages yet.

Veldbook

Veldbook is a plant journal. The Android package name is app.veldbook. You can use it without signing in and without sending your journal anywhere.

The journal is kept in the app so you can record and look after plants. It can include:

  • Photos you take or choose of a plant, and a surroundings photo when you add one.
  • The exact location of a sighting, from your device’s location or from a point you place, and a town name looked up from that point.
  • Plant names, inventory, cultivation records, nursery or breeder names, notes, and watering records.
  • The grower name and surname you enter, or that you accept from a Google profile. These initials are used on new cultivation codes.
  • Your choices for backup, Wi-Fi, and local reminders.

Veldbook does not ask for your email address, contacts, advertising identifier, or a device identifier used for advertising. Reminder times stay on the device. They are not sent to a push service by Veldbook.

Google sign-in

Sign-in is optional. If you sign in, Veldbook asks Google only for your account identifier and profile name. Veldbook keeps that identifier and the given name and surname. It does not request or store your email address, and it does not keep the sign-in token.

Signing in does not send the journal. Google receives the sign-in itself. Google’s own privacy policy applies to Google’s handling of that sign-in. Google may process that sign-in outside South Africa.

Backup

Backup is off until you turn on Back Up My Journal. Leaving it off means the journal is not sent. You can turn it off again later, and Veldbook still works.

When you turn backup on, and backup is operating, Veldbook sends your journal to Cloudflare so you can restore your sightings, inventory, cultivation, watering, and photos. That copy includes exact locations and the stored photos. Cloudflare stores it in Western Europe. Cloudflare has no South Africa region. You do not receive a Cloudflare account. Cloudflare holds the journal only to provide this backup for Devonport Studios.

Upload and download on Wi-Fi only is on unless you turn it off. Turning it off also allows mobile data. Veldbook does not sell the journal. Another person’s journal is not readable by you, and yours is not readable by them.

The backup switch records your choice. The journal is not uploaded until that backup is made available. Before it is made available, Veldbook will also let you delete a cloud copy from the app. Until then, you can ask for a backup to be deleted using the contact below, and turning backup off stops anything further from being sent.

Sharing a place

Sharing stays off until you choose it on a record. A private collection is never included in a shared place. A shared habitat sighting can leave only as a square about 5 km across, not as an exact pin. A public nursery can leave only as the nursery name and the town. That choice is not offered yet, so nothing is shared on that basis today.

Map

The map shows your own sightings from the journal on your device. To draw the ground, Veldbook requests map tiles for the area on screen from Esri (World Imagery and World Topo Map, which include imagery from Maxar and Earthstar Geographics). On the Hybrid style it also requests place-name tiles from OpenFreeMap, which uses OpenStreetMap data. Those providers learn which area of the map you are viewing. Veldbook does not send them your journal, your photos, or your Google account.

Identify with Google Lens

If you choose Identify with Google Lens, Veldbook opens the Android share sheet with that plant photo. The photo leaves the device only if you then pick an app on the sheet, such as Google Lens. Veldbook does not receive the identification result. The app you pick handles the photo under its own policy.

Children

Veldbook is not made for children, and it does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

How long Veldbook keeps information

Records stay in the app until you delete them or you uninstall Veldbook. A cloud backup, once one exists, is kept until you delete it or you ask Devonport Studios to delete it. Turning backup off stops further sending. It does not by itself erase a copy that was already stored.

You can correct the journal in the app, including your name and surname. You can refuse backup and keep using Veldbook. You can withdraw backup by turning Back Up My Journal off. You can ask to see or delete a cloud backup. Devonport Studios is the responsible party for Veldbook under South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act.

Delete your data

Delete your Veldbook account and data explains the steps, what is deleted, and what is kept.
